Dioxin
Data from Major Chlorine Producers and Users
Dioxin
Data: Source Reduction Activities
The
table displays quantities of dioxins used for energy recovery,
treated, recycled and recovered from the environment through
remediation activities1. PCDD/Fs that are treated
are, by far, the largest category in this section. Treatment
of PCDD/F-containing waste is most often accomplished by destruction
in hazardous waste incinerators. Hazardous waste incinerators
destroy PCDD/Fs
through high temperature combustion. PCDD/F
air emissions from these incinerators are regulated under
the Clean Air Act and are included in air emissions under
the Toxics Release Inventory.

1Figures
rounded to two significant figures and totals may not equal
sum of individual categories due to rounding.
2Although this TRI category technically includes
quantities released to the environment as a result
of remedial actions, catastrophic events, or one time events
not associated with production processes in the reporting
year, chlorine chemical industry respondents here report an
amount recovered and destroyed through remediation
activities.
